2018 Atlas Peak Merlot
The Merlot rows on Atlas Peak generally provide plush, round fruit to complement the intense hillside Cabernet Sauvignon we grow. Carefully farmed and stewarded into wine on its own, it's inherently well suited to be a standalone wine. It was aged in one-time used French oak barrels for 18 months.
In Bordeaux terms, think the aromas of a seductive St. Emilion with the power and density of a Pomerol on the palate. This wine offers aromas of crushed currants, graphite, fresh violets, hints of licorice, bay laurel and plum skins all accented by toasty cocoa and vanilla notes. On the palate, it has a silky entry that belies the power and intensity. Luscious, high-toned fruit with flavors of Bing and black cherry, red currant, plum and blueberry skins with hints of cedar and underlying notes of dried flowers and bay. This wine promises excellent aging potential and is also enjoyable now with a good hour or more decant.
